What is pixel art wall art? Pixel, voxel and blocky styles explained

A short guide to pixel art, voxel art, 8-bit and blocky Minecraft-style wall art: how they differ, why they look the way they do and how to choose a piece.

Pixel art canvases on a wall

Pixel art wall art takes the look of video-game graphics and prints it on something you can hang. The names overlap, so here is how the main styles differ.

Pixel art

Pixel art is built from visible square pixels. Early consoles had very few pixels to work with, so artists made every one count. The look is flat and graphic, usually seen from the front or side.

8-bit and 16-bit

These terms describe the console generation a piece imitates: limited colours, strong outlines, simple shading. They are about the era's palette more than the shape of the pixels.

Voxel and blocky art

A voxel is a 3D pixel: a tiny cube. Voxel art builds scenes from cubes, which is why Minecraft worlds look the way they do. Voxel scenes have depth, lighting and perspective, so a landmark can be viewed from above or at sunset while every surface is still made of blocks. Our canvases are blocky, voxel-style scenes: the Eiffel Tower, a dragon, floating islands.

How to choose

  • For a bedroom or gamer room: glowing, high-contrast scenes such as our loot series read well from across the room.
  • For a living space: landmark scenes at golden hour sit comfortably next to other art. See Landmarks in Blocks.
  • For a kid's room: friendly subjects such as the axolotl work well.

Is it Minecraft art?

Our designs are inspired by the blocky look that Minecraft made popular, but they are original compositions. Quali3D is not affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft.
