How to buy a gift for a gamer you don't understand: a guide for grandparents, aunts and uncles

You don't need to know the game. Three questions to ask, what to avoid, and safe pixel-art gift ideas for a gamer kid, from a sticker sheet to a canvas for their wall.

You do not need to understand the game to give a gift a gamer loves. You need three answers and a gift that is clearly about their world, not yours. Here is how to get there if you are a grandparent, aunt, uncle or family friend.

Why this matters: you are probably not the only one buying

In an Interac and Burson survey of Canadians (19 to 24 November 2025, 377 parents), 33% of parents said grandparents spend more on the kids' gifts than they do themselves, and 21% said they rely on grandparents for holiday support. Source: Interac. Extended family often buys the big gift, which makes a good choice more important, and easier to get wrong.

Three questions to ask a parent (not the kid)

  1. "Which game do they play most?" One name is enough. You are not looking for expertise, only a theme.
  2. "What do they already have?" Consoles, controllers and headsets are usually bought by parents. Ask what is missing, so you do not duplicate it.
  3. "Are they decorating their room?" If the walls are bare, wall art is the easiest gift to give, because nobody else is likely to buy it.

What to avoid

  • Gift cards for a game you cannot name. They are fine as a last resort, but they feel like cash.
  • Anything that needs to be paired, installed or set up unless a parent says yes.
  • The wrong game. Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite fans each have a distinct look. A pixel-art gift for a kid who loves a different style can miss.

Gifts that are safe, specific and low-effort

  • Small: a pixel-art sticker sheet for a laptop, bottle or notebook.
  • Medium: a pixel-art mug, a tee or a hoodie in the Loot designs.
  • Big: the Skull on Fire canvas, or the Loot Trio (sword, pickaxe, potion) as a row of three above the desk. A canvas arrives ready to hang, so there is nothing to build. Square canvases start at CA$76.99 for 10 x 10 inches.
  • If the kid has a 3D printer: an instant-download STL file. Check with a parent first.

Pitch it with one line

When they open it, you do not need to explain the game. Say: "I asked your mum what you play, and thought this would look great in your room." It shows you listened.

Ordering in time

Canvases, mugs, stickers and apparel are printed to order, so allow 5 to 7 days for production before shipping. For Christmas 2026, order by December 4 for the US and December 1 for Canada. See the shipping page, the gift guide and our earlier post on who really picks the holiday gift.
